How to Get Free or Reduced Price Theatre Tickets to Many Plays in the San Francisco Bay Area

The Bay Areas is home to dozens of theatres and playhouses. Here's how to get free or reduced price tickets to view those plays:

Reduced Price Tickets to Theater

While having a morning latte at your favorite Wi-Fi cafe, take a look at the Tix Bay Area site to see what productions have 1/2 price tickets available. Then, go to SF Weekly and click on "Culture" and "Night and Day" and look through the current and archived reviews of the available theatre productions to see which of the available productions you want to see.

Now get yourself over to the actual Tix Bay Area kiosk well before their 11 a.m. opening and stand in the "half price ticket line".

Another option is to go to the individual theatre or theatres the day of performance and inquire about reduced price tickets.

Free Theatre

San Francisco Shakespeare Festival "Shakespeare in the Park" "... shows are free, and ground seating available on a first come, first served basis. Bring a blanket and a picnic. You may bring a LOW concert / beach seat. There are no tickets necessary for Free Shakespeare in the Park."

Our prices are $6.50 for bargain shows & seniors 65 and over/children 11 and under. $8.50 for general admission.
Bargain shows: Weekend shows starting before 2:00pm & Weekday shows starting before 4:00pm."

BookBeat "....is the venue to screen the work of local Bay Area indie filmmakers.   Because of our dedication to community we value and want to encourage the creative endeavors of this community. Tony Grimani of Performance Media Industries (PMI) www.pmiltd.com also shares this vision with Gary, the owner of BookBeat.  PMI provides our state-of-the-art setup including a 100-inch screen with surround sound.  Each film night Tony donates the time and expertise of his experts to make sure we are set up and ready to provide a cinema experience in the intimacy of a cafe...." 28 Bolinas Ave., Fairfax, CA.

Landmark's Act 1 and 2 (Berkeley) "...I love living in Berkeley because i have access to places such as this. Where else can i catch all the great art-house films. Its hard not to rant and rave about the great films i've seen there, because thats not really the theatre itself, but rest assured, they play great movies.
Best part of the theatre are the midnight movies. Durring the school year they take it upon themselves to select a cult favorite to play each week. the showings are packed to the rafters with costumed fans...."Mercutio S at Yelp.com For notices of advance screenings, etc Join Landmark's Film Club .

How to Get Free Admission to Many San Francisco Theatre Performances Just by Offering Your Help

Most theatres (except large facilities like convention centers and the like) rely heavily upon people like yourself to augment their production staff -- performing everything from set design and manufacture to ushering.

Here are some of the theatres in the San Francisco Bay area whose websites actively solicit your assistance. If you have a theatre in your area not on this list, give the manager a call and ask if they need volunteer ushers. Chances are, they'll say yes.

Appropriate volunteer usher clothing, for both men and women, is black business attire. Men must also wear a white business-dress shirt and necktie. Arrive at the door to the left of the box office in the Veterans Building lobby, one and one-half hours (90 minutes) prior to the curtain time (for example, for an 8:00 p.m. performance you must arrive by 6:30 p.m.). Please note that if you are not on time, wearing proper clothing and carrying a flashlight, you may not be allowed to usher...." Located at San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center

Impact Theatre Has a "tickets for blogging" program. "...We're looking for a few good local bloggers with large, local, outgoing audiences. If we feel your blog meets our requirements, we'll give you a free ticket to one of the first six performances of the next show. In return, you post a review of the show on your blog within 24 hours and email us the link. Your review must be at least 150 words, but what you say about the show or about Impact in general is completely up to you. Requirements: we need to see a stats report that shows that you receive at least 200 visitors a day. It's difficult to tell how many of your visitors are local, but you should be able to show that a significant number (i.e., at least 25%) of your visitors are at least in the Pacific time zone...."
