Some Novel Ways to Meet New People and Make New Friends in the San Francisco Bay Area

Brainstormer Pub Trivia Nights "... a LIVE team trivia contest that is played at numerous bars, restaurants, clubs and corporate parties..." Check the site for locations and times.

San Francisco City Guides Free Waking Tours are a great way to discover San Francisco's neighborhoods... and meet new people in the process. "... City Guides volunteers are serious about sharing the fun of discovering San Francisco and its neighborhoods. Our purpose is to preserve and perpetuate the history and folklore of San Francisco and to celebrate its rich history of cultural diversity. And in the spirit of our primary sponsor, the San Francisco Public Library, we provide this service free of charge." An impressive list of tours offered... over time, you could take them all!

SF Treasure Hunts "...Teams of 4 to 6 players collaboratively solve a series of puzzles, riddles and mini-mysteries, each leading to an exciting mystery location – a historical plaque, a hidden view, an architectural delight – that few tourists ever see. The team that solves the most clues and plans their route around the playing area most strategically wins the hunt.." The most popular of the SF Treasure Hunts is the Chinese New Years Treasure Hunt for which you can volunteer (must have paid ticket). Advantages of volunteering include "...Meet other hunters, learn about the inner workings of putting on this event, and help out a worthy cause...."

OCSC Sailing Club -- San Francisco Bay

"...is committed to making sailing available, affordable, and approachable to anyone with the desire to sail.... you are now a part of a community of sailors, from beginning students to some of the highest rated US Sailing instructors in the country, dedicated to a degree of excellence in sailing above most other standards." The cost? Lifetime membership is $595 (we've seen a $200 discount on this price in a "special") or monthly membershp fee of $59. The perks? Learning to sail without owning a boat. Connecting with 100's of fellow sailing enthusiasts at free weekly and monthly events." Activities include free Wednesday Apres-Sail Mixers "...We supply hot chili and chips, beer, wine and soda. Come and meet some fellow sailors and add some names to your personal crew list. Looking for new sailing mates? Feel free to come only to the mixer. Whatever you choose, you’ll be certain to have a great time!" Once a month, the Wednesday mixer is a free barbeque. As a member, you can also put yourself on a "crew list" or "sailors oncall" list. Also, they have an annual "Spring Fling" in April.

Member perks include an adjunct membership in the Berkley Yacht Club... and the ability to ".... stay aboard any yacht in our fleet. If you are enrolled in a two or five day class, you may stay on the yacht on which you are training for free. We have our own shower and rest room facilities, making this an excellent, convenient amenity for students coming from out of town. If you want to stay on one of our larger yachts, you may do so for a fee of $26.25/night, single occupancy. Additional persons are $7.50/night. As a member, you do not need to be enrolled in any classes to take advantage of this offer...."

Now here's an interesting fact we uncovered: something called Flotilla Planning Parties. "The easiest and most economical way to enjoy bareboat chartering is by joining an OCSC Flotilla. Dozens of people do every year. On these trips, which we arrange several times a year, sailors of all ages and skill levels are welcome. You may reserve a full yacht or sign up individually. That's where the planning parties come in.....the planning party is also the best way to find a spot on a boat, or if you're a skipper, find crew to fill your berths. You do not need to be an OCSC member to join us at the planning party or on the flotilla."

San Francisco Singles Events That Take The Pressure Off of Dating

SinglesOnTheGo.com Lists a number of speed dating services, networking and dining groups for singles.

Table for Six "...What if singles events didn't connote ideas of standing around uncomfortably, holding a glass of wine and trying to make conversation? What if, instead, "singles events" meant cooking classes, hiking, rock climbing, and tequila tasting? Table for Six Total Adventures members think "fun" and "excitement" when they think of singles events; these are some of the most happening events in the Bay Area and Sacramento....Our famous dinners of six people, three men and three women, are more like a group of friends getting together than a "blind" date. Since we match people according to personality and lifestyle, chances are good that you'll click with everyone at the table."

San Francisco Bicycle Ballet "...The San Francisco Bicycle Ballet was founded in 1996 by an old school bicycle rider and pals of the road. The Bike Ballet is performed to be viewed from above. The concept was originally based upon marching bands and swimmers-busby styley stuff. As the seasons continued- a firefly firework side look has evolved. The focus is on the beauty of the bicycle, its ride and the intermingling shapes of motion. Simply a treasure to behold! We have performed at many benefits, museums and special events. We are community based and encourage nice thoughts. We have our own band (the Spoke Tones), a core group of active members and a team of veteran ballerinos and 'rinas. We always have a summer show and we ask our talented film makers, musicians and other enabled friends to join in the show. We support bicycling as a way to have fun and be social."
