San Diego, with its year round gloriously temperate climate, outstanding ocean to mountain local, and rich multicultural history, is the perfect backdrop for a variety of outdoor marketplaces, street faires, as well as many festivals, both indoor and outdoor.

Many provide a free way to spend a few hours or an entire weekend enjoying yourself ... or, in the case of the "Taste of" festivals... for a relatively modest cost to value ratio.

And for those festivals which do charge, there is often a way to enjoy them for free... while getting a peek behind the scenes and meeting new people... and that is by volunteering.

Here are some of our top choices.

Special San Diego Historic Districts... and Their Weekend Markets

Asian Pacific Historic District Sundays: 3rd Avenue Farmers Market, 9 to 12 a.m. Free. ( Third & J Street); 2nd Saturdays: Monthly district tours from Chinese Historial Museum.

Old Town San Diego "... is nestled in heart of San Diego, with over 150 restaurants, shops, and historical sites... Old Town Saturday Market ... San Diego's largest weekly artisan fair featuring handmade works from local artisans. The market includes such items as jewelry, photography, pottery, clothing, paintings, hand painted glass, glass blowing, woodworking's and more. There is always live music and it is absolutely free.." Shops include Bazaao del Mundo

The Gas Lamp Quarter Victorian commercial buildings built between 1873 and 1930... wide brick sidewalks.... old timey gas lamps... art galleries... sidewalk cafes... unique shops...coffee houses... pubs... 90 restaurants...

San Diego's Street Faires, Fiestas and Festivals

Adams Avenue Street Fair "Southern California's Largest Free Music Festival" 3rd weekend in September. "...more than 80 musical acts performing on seven stages spread out over an eight-block radius. September Street Fair-goers will enjoy a variety of music, including blues, roots rock, world, Latin jazz, reggae, alt-country and zydeco."

Escondido Street Faire Twice a year, 3rd Sunday May and October. Free. "...The second largest one-day street faire in the state...draws more than 60,000 people to over 700 unique vendors with a little of everything: arts & crafts, classic car show, home improvement area, unique clothing, food from around the world, and more. Children's rides, animal demonstrations by the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and an old-fashioned pancake breakfast..."

Fall Back Festival -- Children's Historic Street Faire Celebrated the last Sunday in October in San Diego's Historic Gaslamp Quarter. Admission for Adults and children over 2 is $5. Lots and lots of free activities and free entertainment for children and adults alike.

Fiesta Cinco de Mayo "... is located in historic Old Town San Diego, the birthplace of California. This completely free, sponsored event attracts over 100,000 visitors each year to three days of music and entertainment on five stages, world class food through Old Town restaurants, cultural and historic exhibits and reenactments located in a 22 block area of the Old Town community and Old Town San Diego Historic State Park...."

Xara Dulzura

"Xara Dulzura is a weekend-long outdoor retreat and festival, in which the participants produce works of visual and performing arts, music, teaching and hospitality for one another.

Nothing may be bought or sold, and creativity and generosity are the coin of the realm.

Whether in groups or as individuals, whether through formal performance, spontaneous improvisation, costume, workshops, artistic encampments or installations, or even authentic conversation and personal interaction, every participant bears responsibility for bringing joy and surprise to their fellows.

The forms of this participation are as varied and variable as the participants themselves, but all are asked to bring forth something from themselves.

The shared game of this retreat is to imagine a paradise world we hope will come, and then to pre-enact one of its celebrations. The experience is like walking through a living Maxfield Parish painting, with fantastical landscapes and creatures at every hand.

The landscape itself remains the star of the show, and the spirit of the retreat flows from the green hills, running springs, standing stones and old oaks of the monastery grounds. There is just something here, something wonderful and strong, and it is reflected in the art and play of the participants."

"...a weekend-long outdoor retreat at Madre Grande Monastery in Dulzura, California, half an hour East of downtown San Diego."

San Diego's "A Taste Of" Festivals

Escondido's Tour de Fork

Get Free Admission to Festivals by Volunteering

Little Italy's Festa is actively seeking volunteers to help with annual October festival... with promise of free Festa t-shirt.

Mainly Mozart "... is profoundly grateful to the many generous volunteers who donate their time to help us in countless ways. Volunteers serve as ushers, page-turners, administrative/office help, reception and special event help, and assist with the annual black tie celebration of Mozart's birthday.... San Diego Comic-Con International

"...You can volunteer from one to four days-it's up to you! You are expected to help out for about 3 hours out of a day; the rest of the time you're free to crawl the convention walls as much as you'd like. The volunteers coordinators will do their best to accommodate your schedule. "

Why Should You Volunteer?

Because with great power, comes great responsibility Oh wait, wrong hero. Because it's an awesome show and you get some really cool perks, too!
  • Free entrance to the convention! That means no waiting in line, so extra cash to spend.
  • Super troopers who complete four shifts get a free volunteer T-shirt. Not sold in stores, this shirt allows fellow convention heroes to spot you while in your secret identity.

  • And the super bonus?
  • If you pre-register to volunteer you're invited to attend Preview Night! That's early admission to check out the massively cool Exhibit Hall before the general public.
  • And ask former volunteers, some of their best friendships were formed while working at CCI!

San Diego Film Festival. September weekend. Volunteer for free admission. "Throughout the year the San Diego Film Foundation hosts numerous special events, including Networking Cocktail Hours, Award Show Parties and fabulous Movie Premieres. Sign up for the Film Circuit, our e-mail newsletter, to be kept up-to-date with future Foundation events."

San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival "...Volunteers... work four-hour shifts as door monitors or in a variety of desk jobs, receiving a one-day badge for each day worked and may volunteer for one up to all five days."
