San Diego's Art Walks

2nd Saturday Escondido is a free, monthly, self guided "art walk" through Escondido cultural district, presented by the Escondido Arts Partnership. BTW, the Escondido Center for the Arts is a great place to volunteer.

ArtWalk

Last weekend in April. "...Each year ArtWalk takes place in the charming neighborhood of Little Italy in downtown San Diego. For two days ArtWalk brings the city to life with the San Diego/Tijuana region's biggest art event for an audience of over 70,000."

"This free visual and performing art celebration is set along a scenic path through Little Italy, where live entertainment and works of art are displayed in outdoor venues, studios, galleries, and businesses. Visual artists and performance groups show a variety of works; photography, music, painting, drama, sculpture, glass, dance and more."

"For children, there is the hands-on art experience of KidsWalk. With art exploration events continuous throughout both days of the event. Event Guests ride free on Old Town Trolley shuttles running throughout the event and stopping at key points. Volunteers are stationed along the route to help with directions and answer questions. Find your way to ArtWalk and where to park."

Interested in being an ArtWalk volunteer? Here are the perks: "Complimentary ArtWalk 2006 T-shirt; complimentary refreshments; opportunity to buy reduced ArtWalk merchandise; and opportunity to enter your name in a raffle with exciting prizes, donated by our artists and sponsors."

Ketter Nights "... a progressive evening event featuring art and design exhibitions by members of TADD [The Art and Design District of Little Italy modeled after SoHo and Chelsea in NYC] ... celebrating the finest in art, urban living, home furnishings and accessories and the latest design ideas San Diego has to offer..." Select Friday evenings 6 to 9.

First Thursdays:

TNT: Thursday Night Thing "Every first Thursday of the month, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego hosts TNT (Thursday Night Thing), an ongoing program of intriguing events in MCASD's Downtown galleries. Beginning at 7 pm, something different and interesting will be happening downtown— from slide jams, DJ lessons, and poetry readings to live bands, artists' talks, and video projections— TNT's eclectic events will be occasions to interact with the arts and artists in the San Diego region." Admission to MCASD is free, $3 donation is welcome.

Art Colonies and Enclaves

101 Artists Colony "...Exhibitions are held monthly but the Colony invites the public to check out the studios and the gallery gift shop open daily with the exception of Monday. Studio hours vary and are posted on the artist's door..."

Voz Alta

"... an arts- and community-based non-profit propagating cultural awareness through various art mediums, from visual art and spoken word to writing and creative outreach. The group's downtown space is located at the northwest corner of Broadway and 16th Street, where poets, writers, speakers, art exhibitions and workshops can be found."

"Linked through founders and primary artistic contributors, Voz Alta is commonly associated with Taco Shop Poets (TSP), a passionate collective of spoken word poets who serve up healthy portions of awareness to the willing. TSP had its first reading in 1994 at La Posta taco shop on Washington Street. Taco poets include Adrian Arancibia, Adolfo Guzman Lopez, Miguel Angel Soria, Tomas Riley, Paul "ThaiMex" Phruksukarn, Bennie Herron and various musicians."

"Voz Alta, which formed in the late '90s as a cradle for TSP and other Latino forms of culture and expression, has hosted events such as a Latin jazz open-mic night and a women's writing workshop (Brujas y Bellas -- witches and beauties). Traveling speakers, poets, musical and theatrical productions and art exhibitions representing many cultures make up the remainder of Voz Alta's monthly calendar."

Artists Open Studio Tours

Julian Open Studio Tour "...annual Open Studios is a rare opportunity to explore the quiet country lanes and back roads surrounding Julian, while visiting 12 artists, not normally open to visitors and one local gallery. Roadtrip begins by picking up a map and proceeding to studios within a seven mile radius of Julian" 40 miles east of San Diego. 2nd weekend in November.
