Volunteers are welcome! ArtsHab Helping artists through shared living/studio spaces in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada ArtSpace "...Finding and retaining affordable live/work space is an age-old problem for artists, painters, sculptors, dancers, and others who require an abundance of well-lit space in which to work. Many artists gravitate to old warehouses and other industrial buildings, but their very presence in an industrial neighborhood often acts as a catalyst, setting in motion a process of gentrification that drives rents up and forces the artists out. This is precisely what happened in Minneapolis' historic Warehouse District in the 1970s and led to the creation of Artspace in 1979. Established to serve as an advocate for artists' space needs, Artspace effectively fulfilled that mission for nearly a decade. By the mid-1980s, however, it was clear that the problem required a more proactive approach, and Artspace made the leap from advocate to developer. Since then, the scope of Artspace's activities has grown dramatically. Artspace is now America's leading nonprofit real estate developer for the arts. In the last few years, Artspace has further expanded its mission to incorporate the planning and development of performing arts centers, museums, other arts facilities, and entire arts districts throughout the country...." Check out some of the media buzz about this forward-looking program: City Visions article; Art Calendar article; Bruner Foundation's Silver Award; Greater Paducah Economic Development Council's report; Online Art Magazine's article... and more (just Google "Paducah Artist Relocation program" What one relocated artist had to say: " Recently my husband found an ad in the Art Calendar magazine for an artist relocation program to Paducah, KY. We did a little reasearch on the computer - looked at their website www.paducaharts.com... Most of the information and benefits seemed too good to be true. But, when I spoke to the director... what seemed too good to be true was definitely all true. I was given the name of one of the lenders in the Paducah bank - I spoke with this person extensively to find out what the bank had to offer... I spoke with the director several times, emailed a few of the artists, and also spoke to one artist on the phone, who found me a great place to stay when visiting.... I found out that there is no government money involved with their bank, therefore they can structure the loans however they want... that meant to me is that they were willing to work with you and make this transaction very positive on the financial end. At times they were loaning up to 300% of the value of the buildings... when I arrived...they took me everywhere, and out to dinner and lunch every day - I did not pay for one meal. I was so excited immediately. I wanted to see the real estate that was available, because the neighborhood was so neat - huge massive brick structures, victorian homes, all historic and for the most part ooozing with so much potential to be turned into studios, galleries, homes - or you name it - one gal and her husband are turning one place into a studio, and a restaurant. The houses really range in price - one house was $3k, for a 4,000+- place, to a beautiful house that needed little work, 4200 sq ft for $200K... if you want to build new, well they will give you a lot for free.... There are also new storefronts with lofts above that you can buy - it is really endless. You can turn these structures into any thing you want if it is art related - this is what I understand. I was so excited, I wanted to pick up a place immediately - well, they urged me to take my time, go home, think about it, then visit a few more times - they really want you to make sure that this is what you want, where you want to be because the success comes with the people staying - making this an amazing community. Which comes to the people. They had a potluck and a monthly meeting re-scheduled to accommodate my visit. The people were warm and very nice. They all were so happy to be their and all said that it was the best decision they had made to move to Paducah... Also there are medical plans, and other benefits too.... you are so close to major cities - well within 1-2 hours.... Most of the people were between 35-45 - some older, some younger - but they all had this drive and dedication to make this a wonderful place. I would have to say that most people were educated, that had MFA, BA, a few doctors and architects. All that had given up practice to make Art their life. It felt so good to be their because of the vibe of the community - not only the artist - which to date I believe there are roughly 25 that have moved, but the bank, the city, and the residents were all supportive - it was weird for me just because I come from an area that I know no one who really cares about art - their art endeavors are going to Target to get a framed print. So this meant a lot to me - to have this feeling of support - direction - inspiration and drive... I am so excited and truly believe that with this move I will be able to take my art to a higher level..." Online Art Magazine
