Poetry Organizations in New York

The Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church "...Since its founding in 1966, the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery has been a forum for public literary events and a resource for writers. Over the past 34 years, hundreds of poets, writers and performers, including Allen Ginsberg, John Ashbery, Adrienne Rich, Alice Walker, John Cage, Sam Shepard, Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones), Terri McMillan, Robert Creeley, Alice Notley, Bernadette Mayer, Kenneth Koch, Patti Smith, Yoko Ono, Sherman Alexie, and Michael Ondaatje, have shared their work at the Poetry Project. With three different reading and performance series a week, plus lectures and special events, the Poetry Project is a vital and hospitable hub for the writing community in New York City. The Poetry Project was the scene of the only joint reading by Robert Lowell and Allen Ginsberg and has been the site of historic memorials to poets Paul Blackburn, Robert Duncan, Charles Reznikoff, Frank O'Hara, Ted Berrigan, Edwin Denby and many others. Staffed completely by poets, the Poetry Project consistently achieves an integrity of programming that challenges, informs and inspires working writers, while remaining accessible to the general public. Now in its 35th season, the Poetry Project continues to furnish encouragement and resources to poets, writers, artists and performers whose work is experimental, innovative and pertinent to writing that proposes fresh aesthetic, cultural, philosophical and political approaches to contemporary society...." louderMONDAYS

Every Monday, the louderARTS Project presents one of the country's most diverse and respected poetry series: louderMONDAYS. For six years, the series has provided a nurturing and challenging community for NYC artists, showcased established and emerging poets, and set the standard for excellence in fusing the written and spoken word for the national spoken word and slam poetry community.

louderMONDAYS comprises six formats: SLAM, louderEDGE, Raise the Red Tent, GrooveNation, Q2, and UPPERCASE. Each format incorporates an open mic and seeks to shape or expand the audience's understanding of poetry and the world in which we seek to create it.

A thriving open mic is a critical indicator of the health of a poetry community, allowing poets to share their work with a supportive audience in a non-competitive atmosphere. On any given Monday, the open mic regularly attracts more poets than the night can accommodate, ranging from first-time readers to national slam champions to established academic poets.

Poet's House

"... a literary center and poetry archive - a Collection and meeting place that invites poets and the public to step into the living tradition of poetry. Our poetry resources and literary events document the wealth and diversity of modern poetry, and stimulate public dialogue on issues of poetry in culture.

Founded in 1985 by poet Stanley Kunitz and arts administrator Elizabeth Kray, Poets House is a home for all who read and write poetry.

At the heart of the organization is our 40,000 volume poetry collection. Free and open to the public, the library includes books, journals, chapbooks, audio tapes, videos and electronic media. It is the most comprehensive open-access collection of poetry books in the United States and the foundation for all of our programs and services.

Each year we offer over fifty public programs. Panel discussions and lectures presented within the unique setting of our poetry library link the voices of poets living today to a vast literary tradition. Poets House readings presented in public parks and public libraries throughout the city cultivate a wider audience for the art. Seminars and workshops provide in-depth examination of topics ranging from the poetic voice to the impact of electronic texts on literary publishing. A groundbreaking new festival, The People's Poetry Gathering celebrates poetry's roots in popular oral traditions from around the globe.

Through the annual Poets House Showcase, we gather and exhibit all of the years' new poetry books. Over a thousand books are shown each year from publishers large and small across the country. The Showcase provides readers and writers an opportunity to view the whole range of the art. All of the books are documented in the Directory of American Poetry Books, the most comprehensive bibliographic resource available for poetry published during the 1990's.
