Free Gallery Openings with Receptions "... A gallery exhibition opening is a perfect place to start your New York evening: have a glass of wine, enjoy a small art discussion with a person looking at a same painting, say "hi" to somebody you know (or don't know), and be on your way to do something else... or stay if you choose to do so...."

Arts Spaces and Arts Centers

HERE Arts Center ".... supports artists' independence within an interdependent community. The HERE community provides the artist with access, arts management innovation, and nonprofit enterprise. We measure our success by the lively, active exchange that occurs in our spaces daily.... The New York Times has called HERE “one of the most unusual arts spaces in New York and possibly the model for the cutting-edge arts spaces of tomorrow.” Indeed, HERE has become successful at creating a new kind of arts enterprise—the collaborative multiarts center. In 12 years, we've supported over 11,100 artists and attracted over 850,000 arts patrons.   We aim to integrate art into daily life and engage our community's needs and interests on as many different levels as possible in order to ensure our regular presence in their lives..." Open Artists Studio Tours

TOAST: TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour "... is one of the most eagerly anticipated downtown NYC events of the season, offering a great experience for anyone interested in viewing artwork at the source: the artist's own studio. It's an opportunity to walk around the neighborhood and meet directly with the artist-- and often see work not accessible in gallery settings. Visitors will see the working spaces of both established and emerging artists, from basement to loft, individual and shared. The works range from abstract to representational, realistic to expressionist and traditional to cutting edge, in all media and sizes. Best of all, the viewing experience is relaxed, informal and absolutely FREE! In addition to the artists, many of TriBeCa's best galleries, alternative art spaces, restaurants and institutions participate in this neighborhood-wide event...."

The Harlem Open Artist Studio Tour(HOAST)

2nd Annual Harlem Open Artist Studio Tour
"...
is scheduled for Saturday, May 6, and Sunday 7 , 2006. Open studio events have become a staple of any artistic community, allowing hundreds of neighborhood residents and visitors to see where and how contemporary works of art are conceived. Art lovers have a chance to meet the artist in a relaxed atmosphere and learn about the creative process directly from its source. By bringing visitors directly into artists’ studios, our goal is to create an awareness of the culture of modern Harlem. In an effort to show as many works by Harlem artists as possible, in addition to studios, we have recruited venues, such as the Museum of National Catholic Art, Taller Boricua, and La Marqueta, to showcase artists who are not able to show in their studios. We want our event to unite the communities of East Harlem and Central Harlem by working closely with PR Dream, Association of Hispanic Artists, Taller Boricua and Museo Del Barrio. Visitors will receive a 48-64 page exhibition catalogue which will contain essays by a distinguished critics or art historian about the contemporary culture and arts movement of Harlem and a photo-essay featuring the unique interplay between the work atmosphere and creative process evident in artists' studios."

ARTISTS PARTICIPATION: The 2nd Annual Harlem Open Artist Studio Tour is scheduled for May 6 & 7, 2006, and is open to all artists(visual artists, musicians, theater, film and the spoken word) in Harlem. HOAST was created to unite and promote the artists of Harlem through an annual open studio tour. For two days, art lovers will have a chance to visit the working spaces of contemporary artists, gain an intimate understanding of the creative process, talk to the artist in a relaxed atmosphere, and perhaps buy art. You must be a resident of Harlem, or have a studio in Harlem in order to participate. All media and styles are welcome. Participation is on a first-come basis. Artist participation fees are thirty dollars ($30.00) before January 1 st, 2006, and fifty dollars ($50.00) after January 1 st, 2006.

If you are interested in opening your studio to the public and showing your work, please download an application and send it in to : Reuben Sinha, artHARLEM, 104 West 119th St, #3, New York, NY 10026.

VOLUNTEERS: HOAST is accepting applications for volunteers to work as Event Coordinators and Event Greeters. If you are interested in being a part of this historic event, please download a form and send it in. click here to download Volunteer form(PDF Document). (read more...)

It’s a shop, chock full of mini-comics, self-published novels, CDs, zines, and the cream of the crop of the small press. It’s a lounge, a forum, a place with good music and comfortable seats and a constant supply of refreshing beverages where the pioneers of independent media can meet each other, plan new projects, greet the people who want to experience their work. It’s all about having the best damn living room on the east coast, and putting all the disparate elements of my life together into one big picture...."
