Creating Community Through Passionate Involvement in a Common Cause

One of the best ways to meet people and create meaningful, lasting friendships -- especially in an area as large as Los Angeles is to become involved in a group endeavor that is involves an activity in which you are passionately interested.

When you do this, not only do you further the cause of that activity... but you are likely to meet up with a whole new fascinating group of people who share your interests and goals. What better foundation for friendship than sharing the same passions and concerns!

Here are just a few of the many, many ways to get involved with others in Los Angeles.

To locate others, look at the many other sections of "Budget LA" and you'll see 100's of interesting and rewarding ways to get involved with activities you enjoy. You can also search in Google for whatever activity interests you by searching on "your activity + Los Angeles"... or "your activity + LA".

Angeli Thursday Night Dinners What better way to meet fascinating people who share your interests in wonderfully prepared food than over a delicious dinner accompanied by wine and served Family Style at long tables. These dinners are used by chef Evan Klieman as a place to express culinary interests that go beyond the Angeli Menu. They begin at 7pm., and cost $28.00 not including tax, gratuity and wine/beer. To be advised of Angeli's upcoming events, subscribe to Angeli's Email Newsletter.

The Bicycle Kitchen/La Bici Cocina "... is a cooperatively-run bicycle Culture and repair space dedicated to improving the lives of Angelinos through environmental justice, cultural awareness, community and youth outreach using the bicycle as it's tool. We offer what no other bike shop can offer in the greater Los Angeles area: A safe space for cyclists from all walks of life to repair their bicycles, meet other cyclists, enrich their lives through bicycle awareness and find new outlets for bicycle culture..."

RIDE-Arc is a bike ride in the cool evening air with a loose, vaguely referenced architectural theme, inspired by Midnight Riddazz and originally based out of the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Awesome rides, good vibes taking you to places that shape the Los Angeles urban landscape. In an effort to expand to new places and directions in the LA area, start locations may vary depending on the theme so it is best to inquire before hand or join the mailing list (even better!).

Fallen Fruit "..A SPECTER is haunting our cities: barren landscapes with foliage and flowers, but nothing to eat. Fruit can grow almost anywhere, and can be harvested by everyone. Our cities are planted with frivolous and ugly landscaping, sad shrubs and neglected trees, whereas they should burst with ripe produce. Great sums of money are spent on young trees, water and maintenance. While these trees are beautiful, they could be healthy, fruitful and beautiful. WE ASK all of you to petition your cities and towns to support community gardens and only plant fruit-bearing trees in public parks. Let our streets be lined with apples and pears! Demand that all parking lots be landscaped with fruit trees which provide shade, clean the air and feed the people. FALLEN FRUIT is a mapping and manifesto for all the free fruit we can find. Every day there is food somewhere going to waste. We encourage you to find it, tend and harvest it. If you own property, plant food on your perimeter. Share with the world and the world will share with you. Barter, don't buy! Give things away! You have nothing to lose but your hunger!..."

 Tia Chucha's Café Cultural

Bookstore, Cafe, Art Gallery, Performance Space, Internet Cafe

"... a dream of community empowerment. Three San Fernando residents--Maria Trinidad Rodriguez, Enrique Sanchez, and Luis J. Rodriguez--came together in November 2000 and created a partnership to make this dream come true. On December 15, 2001 this dream became a reality when we opened our doors to the public.

At Tia Chucha's we provide great books on Xicano history and literature, young adult fiction, as well as indigenous, contemporary and social commentary issues, Spanish-language, and bilingual children's books. We believe that every mind is precious and that books and the arts can save lives.

We also provide a space for community Open Mic nights, for musical performances, for theater and performance pieces, for author readings and signings, for documentaries and feature films of social relevance, and great dialogue on the pressing issues of the day.

We have an art gallery featuring the creations of local and internationally-recognized artists and sculptors, including art receptions for the community.

We've established a full coffee bar with the best in espresso coffee drinks, as well as smoothies, tamales, pan dulce, muffins, juices, soft drinks, flan, cakes and more.

And to help serve this low home-computer usage area, last fall we opened an Internet Café with access to the Internet, emails and work files.
