Free Days at LA Museums

Carnegie Art Museum (Oxnard) Fridays 3-5 pm: free.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art "After 5 pm and the second Tuesday of each month, General Admission to the Galleries is free to all." On the second Tuesday, you can also take advantage of the fact that Tuesday matinee tickets for films are just $2 ($1 for senior). Check the Museum Calendar for films, tours and other scheduled events.

MOCA The Museum of Contemporary Art Wells Fargo Free Thursdays: Admission is free for all MOCA venues every Thursday, 5-8pm.

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County "...Admission is free on the first Tuesday of each month."

Page Museum at La Brea Tar Pits "...Admission is free on the first Tuesday of each month." Admission is also always free to members and children 5 and under.

Santa Barbara Museum of Art Admission free every Sunday.

UCLA Hammer Museum Free on Thursdays for all visitors. Take advantage of the Docent-led Tours Thursdays at 1pm and 6pm. "Free docent-led tours of special exhibitions are offered during the run of exhibitions. Tours convene at the entrance to special exhibition galleries." Free Thursday lectures at 7 p.m. Check their website for occasional other free events aka "Hammer Bashes". All school groups are admitted free of charge.

Hollywood Bowl Museum "..open every night before concerts - and daytime all year round."

The Getty Center "...presents the Getty's collection of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views...." Admission is free. No advance notice or tickets. Parking is $7, cash only.

The Getty Villa (Pacific Palisades) "... is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria". Many educational and family events. Admission is free, but must be scheduled in advance. Parking is $7, cash only.

Special Museum Events and Evenings

First Friday's at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles Country. "... First Fridays is a discussion and performance series that elaborates on the issues raised by our COLLAPSE? exhibit. These evenings explore our relationship with the environment via conversation, folklore, music, fashion, film and dance. They are designed to stimulate the mind, spark the spirit and stir the body... General admission $15, Museum members and students (w/ ID) $12. Discussion seating is limited and is awarded on a first come first served basis so please arrive early. Wolfgang Puck Catering & Events will provide food and drink concessions for sale.

 

Museums of the Arroyo Day

MOTA Day... It's fun, it's festive, and it's only one day a year!

".... Museums of the Arroyo Day, where the five museums located along the Arroyo Seco in Los Angeles and Pasadena open their doors free of charge from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m...."

"Each year, thousands of Angelinos have experienced the diverse mix of art, architecture and history of the Arroyo Seco area found in the five unique history-based museums that preserve and perpetuate early Los Angeles life.  The public can visit one or all of the museums during the day at no charge, with free and continuous shuttle service running between museums. Visitors can park their cars once and then shuttle to the museums of their choice...."

MOTA Day typically takes place the first Sunday in May.

Volunteering at a museum is an excellent way to work behind the scenes...or with the public... in a culture-filled environment... while at the same time giving back to the community.

AMOCA American Museum of Ceramic Art Offers many opportunities to become involved as a docent. Open on the "Second Saturday" of each month until 10 P.M. Free for first year of operation.

Autry National Center "...Support the Autry National Center.... positions available at the Autry’s two campuses: Southwest Museum of the American Indian in Mt. Washington, and the Museum of the American West in Griffith Park.... hours are available weekdays, weekends, and Thursday nights...."

Bowers Museum (Santa Ana) "...Courtesy of the Lockhart Family and a generous donation in the memory of Dorothy Goerl, the Bowers Museum is pleased to offer free admission to its permanent exhibits on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. On these days, Santa Ana residents will receive free admission to all of the museum exhibits with proof of residency (e.g., driver's license, utility bill, etc). "

California Heritage Museum (Santa Monica)

Page Museum La Brea Tar Pits "...Rancho La Brea is one of the world’s most famous fossil localities, recognized for having the largest and most diverse assemblage of extinct Ice Age plants and animals in the world. Visitors can learn about Los Angeles as it was between 10,000 and 40,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, when animals such as saber-toothed cats and mammoths roamed the Los Angeles Basin .... Interested in becoming an Education volunteer at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits? Volunteer workshops are offered periodically throughout the year.... " The scientific staff are "...always looking for conscientious people to work as volunteers in our science laboratory.  At present, volunteers work on sorting matrix and cleaning/repairing fossil bones collected during both our early digs in 1914-1915 and our current excavation at Pit 91."
