Art on the Zoo Fence A Honolulu weekend tradition: on sunny Saturdays and Sundays, budding artists display their artwork along the Monsarrat Avenue fence enclosing the Honolulu Zoo. This event has helped to launch quite a few of Hawaii's artists, and is a great way for vistors to Honolulu to meet the artists and discover Hawaii through their fresh eyes. 2355 Ala Wai, #307, Honolulu, HI 96816, 808-946-7282 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays

The ARTS at Marks Garage "... a collaborative gallery, performance and office space for businesses and non-profit organizations aiming to transform downtown Honolulu with the power of the arts. We are located in Chinatown and the Honolulu Arts and Cultural District...." 1159 Nuuanu Avenue

Downtown Gallery Walk and First Friday ".... Individuals, businesses and nonprofits located in the Chinatown/downtown neighborhood who present art in their establishments, developed the Downtown Gallery Walk Map and First Friday event. This community-based effort includes traditional galleries and museums, however, some participants bring elements of interest and surprise to the mix including cafes, building lobbies, antiques stores and a tattoo parlor. The range of artists and art presented at the venues is also diverse and insightful and includes contemporary western art, multi-ethnic and Hawaiian art, children’s art, retrospective exhibitions, canoes, tattoos and bonsai. Exhibition opening receptions, demonstrations and lectures, games and special sales events characterize the activities each month. ... Recognizing the increased numbers of people on the streets, restaurants and retail businesses in the area are joining the event in an informal way by offering food and beverage specials and hosting their own special events...."

Raku Ho`olaule`a "...an annual community Raku ceramics workshop and camp out, preceded by an Urasenke tea bowl workshop, a public demonstration of the construction of a clay piece, a slide lecture and a reception for the guest artist. The camp out is followed by a juried exhibition opened by a festive reception with a Tea Ceremony firing demonstration. Raku Ho`olaule`a, a weekend ceramics workshop held at Kualoa Park on the Windward Side of Oahu is enhanced by the presence of a nationally or internationally known potter who works with the participants. This annual event brings together potters to demonstrate and participate in raku, pit firing and other firing techniques. The guest artist also serves as a juror for an exhibition of work created during the workshop...." 3 days, second weekend in June

Meet Hawaiian Artists at Their Opening Receptions

One great way to meet artists... and other art aficionados... and to partake of some delicious complimentary refreshments... is to attend the opening night receptions of new art shows.

Here's a list of galleries who publicize their receptions on their websites. The best way to find out about receptions is to put your name on the mailing lists of galleries whose artists interest you.

Cedar Street Galleries In addition to new shows, has an ongoing exhibit of more than 100 of Hawaii's best artists' paintings, sculptures, glass, wood, and ceramics. 817 Cedar Street, Honolulu
